Having launched its new catalogue of audiobooks in the US in September, Spotify has moved quickly to roll it out to other countries too.

Today, its 300k-strong catalogue is also available in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, with Spotify focusing first on English-language markets for its latest spoken-word efforts.

Spotify's audiobook service gives users access to over 300,000 audiobooks, but it isn't part of its unlimited streaming service. That means even though you're signed up to an existing streaming plan, you won't automatically get access to audiobooks. Users that want to listen to audiobooks will need to purchase each one and then listen to them using the service.

However, the implementation of audiobooks in the Spotify app leaves much to be desired from the consumer’s perspective. The company doesn’t want to make the titles available through in-app purchases, where it would have to pay Apple or Google a commission on its sales. That means users have to first visit Spotify’s website to purchase the book, pay Spotify directly, then return to the app to actually access the title. What’s more, Spotify isn’t linking to its website from its mobile app. Instead, when a user taps “play” on the audiobook they’re interested in, a message appears that explains: “You can’t buy audiobooks in the app. We know, it’s not ideal.”

As in the US, the audiobooks are not included within Spotify’s existing paid subscription or free service. They can be viewed by Spotify users, but must be purchased from a webpage using an a la carte model before they can be unlocked and listened to within its app.

And yes, this means that like in the US, the feature remains at the mercy of Spotify and Apple’s ongoing feud. Spotify recently admitted that its audiobooks purchase flow “is far too complicated and confusing” for listeners, claiming that this is the only interface that Apple would accept after a series of rejections of its updated iOS app.
